Accessibility

MITS takes pride in providing service for everyone — regardless of a person’s ability. All MITS buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps and a “kneeling” feature at the front steps. All MITS drivers are trained in the proper operation of the equipment. Under normal operating circumstances, you are expected to wheel yourself onto the lift without assistance from the driver.

While it is not mandatory that you allow the driver to attempt to secure your wheelchair, it is strongly recommended. For more information about accessible equipment, please call our office at (765) 289-MITS (6487).

MITS schedules and general information are available in braille, on computer disk, and in large type.  To request a schedule in one of these formats, please call (765) 289-MITS (6487).

MITSPlus

MITS offers a door-to-door transportation option for those individuals who have a disability that prevents the individual from riding the fixed route buses. MITSPlus vans will come to your door and take you anywhere in Muncie — for any reason. The days and hours of service are the same as the fixed route service hours. An advance reservation is required and you must complete an application process. For more information about MITSPlus, please call (765) 284-4753.

Requests for Reasonable Modifications / Complaints

In any situation when any person complains or raises a concern with a MITS employee about discrimination, policies or services with respect to passengers with a disability, and the employee (or the employee’s supervisor) does not immediately resolve the issue to the customer’s satisfaction or provide a reasonable modification to MITS policies and practices, the customer has the right to contact our Complaints Resolution Official (CRO).  Please call (765) 282-2762 option 6 and the employee will provide the customer with the CRO’s phone number, email address or information in a format he or she can use.

Travel Training Assistance

Travel training is free and is customized to meet each individual’s needs. Travel training will give you the skill, confidence and independence to get where you need to go. Riding the fixed route system offers more convenient and independent travel than using MITSPlus. You’ll learn how to:

  • Read bus maps and schedules
  • Plan your trip and ride your necessary routes
  • Recognize bus stops, landmarks, and route names
  • Pay fares and purchase passes
  • Safely cross the street and other important pedestrian skills
  • Prepare for the “what ifs” of bus riding, such as “What if I miss the bus?”
  • Ride the bus with confidence.

To learn more or to schedule your training, call (765) 282-2762.

Citizens Advisory Committee

The Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) Board of Directors has appointed a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) consisting of local riders of MITS and MITSPlus to represent and voice a broad spectrum of transportation and community concerns. During the development of the MITS mission and programs, the CAC represents and reflects the values of the community and acts as the community voice. The CAC accomplishes this by providing the management of MITS with comments and suggestions to help improve the transportation plans, programs and studies, and community concerns. The CAC also communicates information about the MITS mission and programs back to the community. They also ask for community input for feedback to the management team and employees of MITS.

Any person has the right to contact the Complaints Resolution Official (CRO) if they raise a concern or have a complaint about a MITS employee and the issue is not immediately resolved. These concerns could include but are not limited to discrimination, policies, or services with respect to a disabled passenger. If the MITS employee or employee’s supervisor cannot resolve the issue to the customer’s satisfaction or provide a reasonable modification to MITS policies and practices then the customer should contact the CRO. Please call (765) 282-2762 with extension 202 to speak with the CRO.
