REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance
JOB SUMMARY: Supervises a team of mechanics, manages daily garage operations, and performs hands-on repairs. Key duties include assigning work, assisting staff, ensuring quality control, and managing administrative tasks such as work orders and part/fluid inventories and accounting. This role requires strong leadership skills and strong mechanical expertise to ensure smooth, efficient, and safe shop operations.
I. JOB DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- All Class “A” Mechanic Duties
 - Scheduling and assigning work orders.
 - Monitoring PM’s on all revenue and non-revenue vehicles.
 - Monitoring cleanliness of building and grounds, garage area, and all revenue and non-revenue vehicles and assign staff for cleaning.
 - Monitoring damage(s) on all revenue and non-revenue vehicles. Report new damage.
 - Assist with procurement of vehicles, equipment, and monitor warranties.
 - Utilize software for vehicles, parts, tires and building and grounds data tracking and entry.
 - Review defect cards and schedule needed repairs. Make WO for work needed and ensure parts are checked out.
 - Daily review of held units and determination of if unit should remain held or returned to service which includes, but is not limited to bus advertising.
 - Monitor revenue vehicle mileage and re-assign route schedules.
 - Monitor, review, edit and record all roadcalls on a monthly basis.
 - Monitor fluid usage, record all usage monthly and provide the data to the Parts Room Manager.
 - Monitor tire room stock.
 - Monitor prolonged out of service vehicles for part back orders.
 - Monitor staff schedules and work with the Director of Maintenance on any schedules or overtime needs/changes.
 - Monitor service truck cleanliness and equipment to ensure readiness for roadcalls.
 - Mentor maintenance staff on work, facilities, equipment and safetly.
 - Be available to answer calls to assist maintenance staff with calling and assigning necessary staff for safety, emergency, or roadcall situations that need additional support.
 - Ability to work with the Transportation Department to ensure service.
 - Ability to work with the IT Department on electronic equipment.

II. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE
High school diploma or GED required; must possess 6 years’ experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines or a two year degree in Automotive Service Technology or Agricultural/Diesel Service Technology from an approved college; Proficient in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and replacement of all automotive and bus mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, power plant, drive Iine, HVAC, body and structural components and systems. Must be proficient in reading and interpreting manuals, diagrams and other instructional and reference material and in recommending repair procedures. Must be proficient in the use of all diagnostics equipment in the course of duties. Must have knowledge to pass MITS skills test and obtain certification by A.S.E. (Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) as a Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician. Must be capable of performing duties independently and with a minimum of instruction in the vast majority of tasks as assigned. Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license and have had no suspensions or revocations during the last three years.
EMOTIONAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS
Stressful situations occur occasionally, for example, handling road emergencies. Deals with public occasionally, for example when doing a service call on a bus/van in service. Decision making skills are used regularly, for example, to diagnose vehicle systems and components. Certain tasks require concentration and the ability to think in analytical terms. Requires the ability to deal with multiple tasks. Must be able to handle frequent interruptions. Must have strong leadership and conflict resolution skills.
III. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
MOBILITY
Sits while operating buses/vans, service vehicles, and fork lift approximately 10% of work day. Stands and moves freely around the garage while performing work duties 50% of the work time. Stoops or bends approximately 10% of work time. Climbs in and out of buses/vans and automotive work pit 10% of the work time. Crawls (sometimes in tight spaces) 5% of the work time. Lays horizontally while working when necessary.
EXAMPLES OF WEIGHTS LIFTED AND THEIR FREQUENCY
Lifting is an essential part of this job. Regularly lift tools and parts up to 50lbs. Lifts hood and compartment doors on buses/vans, etc. Pushes/pulls tool cart, etc. weighing up to 75lbs.
VISUAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to read and comprehend written material and distinguish material using close-up vision, for example, to read service manuals, blueprints and electrical schematics. Depth perception, peripheral vision, distance vision, and color perception are required for driving. Color vision is essential to distinguish chemical codes which are represented by color, distinguishing gauges of wire, etc.
DEXTERITY
95% of work time involves extensive use of hands and fingers. Fingering is extensively used, for example, when removing/replacing nuts and screws from mechanical parts and performing other necessary repair and maintenance functions. Reaching and grasping are involved approximately 80% of work time. Reaches overhead frequently while working underneath vehicles. Grasps hand tools such as wrenches, screw drivers, operating the fork-lift controls, vehicles, bus door controls, two-way radio, etc. Feels with the fingertips regularly, for example to determine if a part is worn.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Noise level is usually loud—multiple diesel engines, pneumatic tools, etc. Exposure to outdoor weather extremes occurs frequently. Regular exposure to diesel fumes. Regular exposure to dust and dirt. Regular exposure to wet, oily conditions. Sporadic exposure to miscellaneous maintenance chemical fumes and to welding and grinding sparks. Must wear safety glasses, hearing protection and/or other personal protective equipment when performing specific sporadic tasks. Must wear safety shoes at all times.
HEARING/TALKING
Listening and talking (communicating) are essential to performing this job. Must be able to hear and understand normal speech, as some job information is received verbally. Must be able to hear environmental sounds such as engine noises, brake noises, etc., to assist in trouble-shooting mechanical problems. Must talk to other employees in person and on two-way radio.
IV. MISCELLANEOUS
Must have ability to secure and maintain a Class B (“P” endorsement) Commercial Driver’s license. Must possess a minimum of industry standard mechanical hand tools and a mobile storage cabinet for their securement. Must be willing to work shift hours and days as assigned. May be required to wear a chemical respirator when performing vehicle undercoating or body and paint repairs.
